What review requests will I accept?
I am mostly interested in YA books, though I will also happily read adult books, and am also open to reading middle-grade.
Similarly, while my preferred genres are fantasy, literary fiction, and contemporary romance, I am open to any genre except horror, though I will likely refuse most non-fiction requests as well.
I will not read books with very explicit violence, torture, or gore.
I will accept both e-books and physical copies. I live in the United States and, if offered a physical copy of a book, I can provide my address upon accepting the review request.
I will accept books from both traditionally published and self-published authors. I accept both books that are already published and ARCs; if I receive an ARC, I will try to publish the review as close to the release date as possible unless otherwise requested.
What rating scale do I use?
I rate books on a five-star scale, using half stars in ratings, and, for the most part, I only post reviews that are three stars and over on my blog, though I will post reviews of any star rating on Goodreads. If I agree to review a book, it does not guarantee a positive review, although I am fairly good at judging what books I will enjoy, so it is fairly likely that you’ll receive a positive review if I accept your request. However, please not that I do reserve the right to not review a book even if I accept the request, either because I can’t finish it or just don’t enjoy it.
Here’s rough breakdown of my star system:
5 stars: A book that I loved reading, would definitely reread, and that has very few, if any, things I didn’t like about it. I will be recommending this book to everybody that I talk to for the next few days, and likely beyond that.
4.5 stars: A book that I loved reading and would definitely reread, but that I had several small issues or one large issue with. I will wholeheartedly recommend this book to anybody.
4 stars: A book that I very much enjoyed reading, may reread, but that either fell flat or had enough issues that it couldn’t be one of the above ratings. This is probably my most common rating. I would recommend this book to most people.
3.5 stars: This book is definitely above average, but likely fell short of what I believed to be its full potential in some way, whether that be a trope I hate, an unlikeable main character, or any other major issue that doesn’t quite ruin how good the rest of the book is. I would recommend this book to people, but only if it sounded in line with books they already like.
3 stars: This book felt very meh to me; while there were definitely aspects that I enjoyed, there just wasn’t that much that I enjoyed about it. This is the lowest tier that I would still recommend to somebody, but they would have to have reading preferences that I felt were well-aligned with the book.
2.5 stars: I didn’t enjoy this book, but it wasn’t quite bad enough to warrant me giving it a 2 star rating. It is extremely unlikely that I would recommend this book to anybody.
2 stars: I disliked most of my time reading this book. It probably has some fairly serious plot issues, or some other problem that just makes it completely unenjoyable to read.
1.5 stars: This is the lowest star rating that I actually give; I hated reading this book with every fiber of my being. I don’t think I’ve ever given a 1.5 star review, though it would be feasible if the book was majorly problematic or just that bad, though in either case I would likely just not finish it.
1 star: I don’t give 1 star reviews. If I hated the book that much, I just wouldn’t finish it.
My average star rating is 4.2 stars; I am very good at knowing what books I will like, so, if I accept your review request, it is extremely unlikely that it will receive less than 3 stars, though I make no promises in that regard.
What do my reviews look like?
Upon receiving my copy, in whichever format is offered, I will read it as soon as I can; as long as I receive an ARC at least a week in advance of the release date, I can commit to finishing it and posting a review by the time of publication. I will post reviews on Goodreads and StoryGraph upon finishing the book, and I will then post the review on my blog within a week of the publication date (if I rate the book 3 stars or above). If sent a physical copy of a book, assuming that I rate it 3 stars of higher, I will also feature the book on my Instagram (I may also do this for ebooks, but it isn’t a guarantee).
My reviews tend to vary in detail and structure depending on the genre of the book, though I will typically discuss the characters, plot, setting, and writing separately before doing a one or two paragraph summery at the end of the review. No matter what star rating I give it, I will discuss both things I liked and things I don’t like about the book, and take care to explain why certain things don’t appeal to me, and why other people might enjoy those aspects.
