Today marks the one-year anniversary of my first post on this blog! I haven’t been the most consistent at posting, but I’ve loved blogging so far, and aim to do it with much greater consistency this coming year.
I can’t believe it’s July already! I’m going to do a longer mid-year wrap-up at some point this week, but wanted to do Paper Fury‘s Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag to start off with.
Best book you’ve read so far in 2021?
I’m horrible at decisions, so here are my top 10 books so far, in no particular order.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021?
This is a really hard tossup between Chain of Iron and The Box in the Woods; I loved them both a lot. I’d probably have to give Chain of Iron an edge by virtue of the fact that I thought The Box in the Woods was a little worse than the original Truly Devious trilogy; I still adored it, but I didn’t think it lived up to its preceding books as well as Chain of Iron did.
New release you haven’t read yet, but want to?
Definitely Rule of Wolves. I’ve had it on my shelf for ages, but just haven’t actually mustered up the will to read it yet!
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year?
This is hard; there are a ton of sequels I’m looking forward to, such as Here’s To Us, Any Way the Wind Blows, These Violent Ends, Aristotle and Dante Dive Into the Waters of the World, and The Nobleman’s Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks. Of those, I’d probably have to say Aristotle and Dante Dive Into the Waters of the World is my most anticipated one, since I’ve definitely been waiting for it the longest. Besides those, I can’t even begin to list the standalones that I’m looking forward to.
Biggest disappointment?
Written in Starlight was a huge disappointment, especially because I loved Woven in Moonlight so much. I just didn’t vibe with anything about this book, from the main character to the plot struggle to the jungle setting (I don’t do reptiles, so snakes being mentioned every third page was not doing anything for me).
Biggest surprise?
I was really not expecting to love the Throne of Glass series as much as I am currently. I just finished Heir of Fire and absolutely loved it, so I’m looking forward to finishing the series this summer!
Favorite new-to-me author?
It’s hard for me to choose this based on only reading 1-2 of their books, but some standouts for me were Elizabeth Lim, Kristin Cashore, Emma Lord, and Julie Berry.
Newest fictional crush?
My most recent fictional crush is very new (I just read the first book she’s in in the past three days), but is Manon from the Throne of Glass series. I don’t know; I have a thing for witches. Sue me.
Newest favorite character?
Can I say Manon again? No? I absolutely adored Addie LaRue (The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue), as well as Maia Tamarin (Spin the Dawn), Kitty Granger (The Secret Life of Kitty Granger), Ximena (Woven in Moonlight), Jane Eyre (…Jane Eyre), and Hazel (Lovely War).
Book that made you cry?
This spot goes hands-down to The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. I’m already on my second read of it this year; it absolutely breaks me, but I love it so so much.
Book that made you happy?
A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow was just so cute and fluffy, and I absolutely adored it.
Most beautiful book you’ve bought this year?
The LitJoy Classics edition of Pride and Prejudice is by far the most beautiful object I own and I love it.
What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
I really want to read or reread all of the Jane Austen books by the end of the year, as well as finish Anna Karenina. There are tons of books I want to get to this year, but those are the ones that I specifically set out to complete at the beginning of this year, so I am definitely going to try and do so.
Favorite book community member?
I feel like the best answer to this for me is Paper Fury, who was the first book blogger I ever discovered (which was 5-6 years ago), and is the main person who inspired me to begin blogging.
