Today’s Top Ten Tuesday was Top Ten Books I’d Gladly Throw Into The Ocean, so strap yourselves in for 10 books that I hated reading (to varying degrees). I’d like to preface this with the fact that everybody is, of course, completely entitled to their own opinion of these books, and that I’m sure that some people love these books! They just really really were not for me.

Of Mice and Men

I just loathe this book.

The Inheritance Cycle

I know tons of people love it, but I was so bored to this series, to the extent of reading the plot summaries from the middle of the second book to the middle of the fourth book just so I wouldn’t have to slog through all of them.

We Were Liars

I really just don’t vibe with E. Lockhart’s books. They feel to gimmicky to me, and in this case I just… really did not enjoy the “plot twist” and such.

Dorothy Must Die

I don’t really remember anything about this book other than hating it.

Insurgent & Allegiant

Honestly I feel like Divergent could have been a standalone book that would be a dive into a legitimately interesting dystopian world. The sequels were unnecessary and kind of ruined it.

Hot Dog Girl

I should have DNFed this book. First off, it had the whole “bi girl dating a girl to get a guy’s attention” trope, which is just gag-worthy. Every character was horribly immature and made a ton of bad decisions, but also everybody reacted to said decisions way out of proportion with how bad they were. Also, I think I just have higher standards for books featuring queer relationships because I want what limited representation we have to be good. Overall, the book just really really really was not for me, which is unfortunate because I adored Verona Comics.

The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett

This just felt like… a mess, honestly. Basically, a girl (Lizzie Lovett) disappears in a small town, and the protagonist becomes obsessed with it, creating various conspiracy theories and such to try to explain it. It’s basically just bad decision after bad decision, the most blatant of which is that she (at 17 years old) starts dating Lizzie’s boyfriend, who is 25(?!?!?), and the book doesn’t condemn it at all, and treats it like it’s reasonable and not at all creepy, which is… not optimal.

Layoverland

This was just… not great. The entire thing was based on this concept of Purgatory as waiting at an airport until you’ve made your peace with your life and can go to Heaven. However, our protagonist is selected to be somebody who has to help hundreds of people with that before she’s able to go, because apparently we’re supposed to believe that she almost got sent to Hell, which seemed like a bit of a stretch because she never did anything that bad other than some relatively typical teen girl meanness. Also, there were definitely some ethical issues with the romance, and it was super repetitive, and overall I wish i hadn’t wasted my time reading this.

Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit

I don’t like books where the relationship is based on a lie that could have been so easily avoided. I DNFed this book because it was driving me insane.

It’s Not Like It’s a Secret

Book plots revolving around lesbians dating guys to hide the fact that they’re dating a girl gross me out as a bi girl for so many reasons. I DNFed this one too.

Well there’s my list. Do you agree with my thoughts on these books? Disagree? I want to hear all of your opinions on them in the comments!

I just want to reiterate that these are just my thoughts while reading the books, and that, if you love any of them, then good for you! Tell me what you like about them.
